When you come to choose a wedding gift it’s no wonder that marrying couples issue a wedding gift registry. It’s how to get exactly what you want; here are some true-life stories of the worst wedding gifts ever.

A person was attending their cousins wedding and had not got around to buying a present, so she stopped at a drug store on the way to the wedding and bought some shower gel and deodorant. To finish it off she wrapped the gift up in a plastic bag! Needless to say she was horrified the following morning when all the family sat round and watched the bride and groom open up their presents.

Lesson Learned

Plan ahead; buy the gift at least one month before the wedding. Never leave it to the last minute.

How about the wedding where the mother of the bride gave the happy couples an IOU. Seriously! The mother found herself short of funds as the wedding neared and thought that an IOU (on a blue post it note) would be just the thing. Needless to say six months later the mother of the bride had not even made good on her IOU, I can feel another lesson coming here…

Lesson Learned

Plan ahead, budget for your gift well in advance. Not getting the Bride and Groom a gift can be the sort of event that remains with them for a long time.

There was another occasion where the brother in law of the Groom brought a tin of paint for the happy couple. First of all a tin of paint! Now it happened that the Bride and Groom needed some paint as they had moved into a new house. However, the Bride was not keen at all on the colour and after some ‘interesting discussions’ the brother in law agreed to return the paint and provide a gift certificate instead. You guessed it - the gift certificate never arrived. And the lesson is

Lesson Learned

It is definitely not advisable to get a gift for a wedding where you could be risking a clash with personal taste.

My advice - stick to the Gift Registry.

It is traditional to give your groomsmen a gift as a token of your appreciation for participating in your wedding. Coming up with a great wedding gift for the groomsmen is not always easy though especially with all the other wedding duties you already have to attend to.

Keep in mind that you do not have to get each groomsman the same thing. You can personalize the gift choices by getting each one something that reflects their interests or personality. Although each groomsman does not have to receive the exact same gift, you should try to spend approximately the same amount on each guy with a little bit more being spend on the best man since he carries additional responsibilities when it comes to participating in your wedding.

Here are some wedding gift suggestions for groomsmen based on different interests:

  • Beer Lovers - Join them in a beer of the month club. It doesn’t have to be for a full year. Three, six, and nine month subscriptions are also offered by many clubs. A home brewing kit also makes a fun gift idea for a groomsman that is a beer lover.

  • Golf Lovers - A nice golf polo shirt or a set of personalized golf balls and tees make great gifts for a groomsman that is a golf lover. If all the groomsmen love golf, a guys golf outing with the groom and all his groomsmen would make a gift they will all remember.

  • Sports Fans - For big sports fans, you could buy them tickets to go see their favorite team in action or buy them gift items such as clothing, home d้cor, or car accessories featuring their favorite sports team.

  • Cigar Lovers - Groomsmen who appreciate a good cigar every once in a while may also appreciate a cigar humidor as a gift. A box of fine cigars also makes a nice gift for a groomsman who is a cigar enthusiast.

  • Outdoor/Nature Lovers - For groomsmen that love the great outdoors, camping equipment or hiking gear makes a unique and thoughtful gift idea.

Remember not to get stressed out over choosing groomsmen gifts. Planning a wedding takes a lot of work and worrying too much over all the details will take some of the joy out of it. If you still aren’t sure what to get them, a gift certificate or a traditional groomsmen gift such as an engraved money clip or flask will always work too!

It’s been suggested that presenting wedding gifts to the bride and groom goes right back to the medieval times where the Lord of the Manor was Lord of all he surveyed, including the people who lived on his estate. His quarrels were their quarrels, and if he went to war with the man next door, they had to aid and abet in whatever way they could.

One of the more pesky traditions that the Lord had come up with was that to celebrate his eldest daughter’s marriage, every tenant had to give the bride a gift of money. One can just imagine, with their level of earnings, how much the tenants looked forward to this event.

Today, while no longer needing to do so, people do like to shower the more powerful people with wedding gifts. But what do you give to a person who has everything? Or if they haven’t, it’s only because they choose to do without it?

One royal couple, newly married, received at least five cars as wedding gifts. Another gift, which was more practical but which would be used almost as much as the cars, was a lawn mower beautifully monogrammed with the couple’s initials. In gold leaf?

In the reign of good Queen Bess, one of the most popular gifts for a wedding couple was a pair of scissors which used to be known as a pair of knives. This gift was often signed with a ditty such as, “Fortune doth give these pair of knives to you, to cut the thread of love if it be untrue.” From this comes the superstition that scissors as a wedding gift is unlucky, symbolizing as it does, the separation of the two lovers.

It is believed that Prince Charles, on his marriage to Diana, received in all something like 6,000 gifts. No wonder he asked guests at his second wedding to please don’t send me any more gifts, I’ve just managed to get rid of the first lot.

Like Prince Charles who either burned, returned or gave away his unwanted wedding gifts, most couples don’t scruple to get rid of the gifts they don’t like or are unlikely to ever use. This is very much unlike the Victorians who were great believers of waste not, want not. Being very duty minded, it was their fervent hope that they would leave the world a richer place than the one they entered. A man who didn’t add to that which he had inherited, let alone squandered what he did inherit, was considered a disgrace to the world of good husbandry.

Today, we want to live a lot, and leave as little as possible when we go. In Victorian times couples were so conscientious, that in some cases the anniversary gifts that they’ve left behind them, are as complete as on the day that they received them.

The old tale about a bride and groom receiving half a dozen toasters from well-meaning relatives on their wedding day has passed into 70s history. But, what to buy the modern couple? It’s a question that is guaranteed to drive their guests to near insanity.

Toasters, bed linen, TVs, pots, pans and all the rest of the boring household necessities are fine but… let’s face it, they aren’t fun to buy, they aren’t fun to receive and they certainly aren’t going to increase in value! So, why not think of the unconventional?

I’ve been involved in various businesses in Scotland over the years: weddings, restaurants, photography, writing, letting property are just a few. And this modern, multi-streaming lifestyle led me eventually to the simple world of buying and selling.

We had a problem. We owned a small Highlands restaurant which could not possibly bring in enough money even if we worked every hour available and filled the place to bursting point night after night. So we thought: let’s sell things as well. We already had a good customer base, and so the challenge was to sell things to them in addition to the good quality food. We needed to ‘add value’ to their dining experience, and charge them for it.

These were the criteria we set:

1 We refused to load profit onto the wine. We knew the profit margins on wine and knew that it was a common tactic of restaurants to charge customers through the nose for drink. And we knew how customers felt about this. They simply don’t like being ripped off! Neither do we.

2 The retail items would need to add to and improve the general ambience of the restaurant so ‘tat’ was out.

3 The items would have to sell themselves. We wouldn’t have the time to give customers the ‘hard sell’ while preparing and serving food and, besides, hard sell is not our style. We don’t feel comfortable with it.

4 The things would have to look good, feel good and be intrinsically interesting.

5 They would have to be accessible to customers, not locked away in drawers or cupboards.

6 They would be the type of thing that would encourage a dinner party atmosphere between diners rather than put up communication barriers. In short, they would encourage conversation.

7 There would need to be a range of items, from the cheap to the expensive so we could not rely on one supplier.

8 We needed a regular and reliable supply of these items.

9 They needed to be cheap to buy and yet give us a healthy profit margin.

10 And finally, they needed to be things that we liked. How could we live with things we hated and how could we sell them to others? Unthinkable!

And the answer to our problem after weeks and months of thinking? Second-hand books, antiques and collectables!

We lined the restaurant with bookshelves and filled them with hard back literature. We filled every nook and cranny with curios. We hung things from walls and from beams and from every spare vertical surface. We even cleared out an old shed and packed it to the gunnels with interesting things. And all of them carried a price tag.

And the result? Success beyond our wildest dreams! The customers loved it, they bought it by the barrowload (we sold barrows as well!) and we made handsome profits. And it was great fun.

So, where did we buy all these items? At local auctions, that’s where. And we still go to them. They are addictive. And we still deal now and again even though we sold our restaurant last year. It’s on a smaller scale than before, admittedly, but that means we can be more selective. Silver and glassware, jewellery and genuine antiques - they are all there to be had as potential wedding presents. Monart glass, silver napkin rings, antique silver-topped wine and vinegar bottles are much more fun than a toaster and, if you buy wisely, you will be giving the lucky couple something that is both beautiful and a sound financial investment.

Think valuable, think collectable! Don’t think toaster!

With most contemporary weddings there is a huge entourage of individuals who are extremely important to the success of the big day. Bearing this in mind, it seems only fitting that these people should be recognized for their time and effort with specifically chosen wedding gifts all of their own.

    Who Should Receive Wedding Gifts?

The obvious answer is anyone who helps out to the extent that the bride and groom feel that they deserve special wedding gifts. Typical individuals who should be considered for such wedding gifts include bridesmaids, best men, ushers and the parents of the bride and groom.

Wedding gifts are also often given to the professionals that help make the day happen, such as your hairdresser or the wedding planner, although these gifts are more token gifts and can be as simple as a nice card or a small bouquet of flowers.

With larger weddings, it is also common practice to offer a small gift to every guest in the form of a favor, placed at each place setting. Due to the large quantity of these wedding gifts that you are required to purchase, they tend to be much smaller and cheaper such as sugared almonds or small chocolates.

    Choosing Wedding Gifts

Of course, your choice of wedding gifts depends largely on the known likes and dislikes of the people whom you have invited to attend your wedding party. If you have a small number of people involved you may be able to purchase individually chosen, more expensive wedding gifts such as a special ornament or piece of jewelry. But remember that it is the thought which counts, and token wedding gifts such as cufflinks, teddy bears and mugs can be just as effective.

As part of the wedding speeches, bouquets of flowers are often given to the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom; this is particularly the case with more traditional wedding ceremonies.

A great cheap way to please the wedding party guests is to offer them pictures of the day as well as any attire that you have purchased especially for them. It is very difficult to think of anything else to do with the bridesmaid dresses and jewelry, so why not use them as unique wedding gifts?

By giving the critical members of the wedding party wedding gifts you will ensure that your important helpers feel that their efforts have been noticed and they will feel that they have truly been a vital part of your big day.

Giving wedding gifts to guests may seem a little odd, but why not share the good fortune of your day and spread a little happiness?

Whenever anyone receives a wedding invite, one of the first things that goes through their minds, is what they should choose as perfect wedding gifts.

Creating a well thought out list of potential wedding gifts is actually an art form and requires a great deal of attention to detail if you want to make sure that you get what you want - without upsetting any guests!

    Perfect Wedding Gifts

Choosing your ideal wedding gifts should be done with your guests in mind. For example, if you have a large number of young or student guests you may want to ask for wedding gifts that can be bought cheaply. A great way of doing this is to have options such as wineglasses, where guests can buy just 2 glasses or they can buy a set of 8 or more, if they choose.

The more flexibility that you offer your guests when it comes to wedding gifts, the less likely they are to ‘go it alone’ and potentially choose something that you do not like.

    Wedding Gifts Lists

It may seem a little presumptuous to send a wedding list out with your invitations but it can save a lot of bother in the long run. Many of the large department stores now offer wedding gifts’ service where individuals can visit the store and make any purchases that they desire. The list is kept updated and therefore minimizes the risks of duplication.

By choosing a company to run your wedding gifts’ list, you do not need to send out an actual list with every invitation, but simply make people aware of the existence of the list and any relevant reference numbers. When choosing the best company, be aware of where your guests live, ensure that there is a branch or shop that is convenient for at least most of your guests. Better still choose a company that offers an online service, so that anyone in the world can make use of the wedding gifts directory.

    Novel Wedding Gifts

With so many people waiting until they are a lot older to marry, the tradition of receiving wedding gifts to ‘set up home’ has largely disappeared. As a result, many couples now look for novel and interesting wedding gifts. For example, there is a growing trend, recently, for suggesting charitable donations to a chosen organization, as an alternative to more traditional wedding gifts.

When it comes to selecting a choice of wedding gifts, it pays to be open-minded, whilst you may not always get exactly what you want, do remember that they are gifts, so smile nicely, and thank your guests.

Wedding gifts are a wonderful way for you to show your appreciation and caring for the newly wed couple. However it is hard to feel passionate about another blender or toaster. Buy the latest kitchen gadget or home d้cor item might be easy but it is not very unique and says that you hardly thought of the couple. However if you purchase a unique wedding gift that stands out from the others the couple will always remember the thoughtful gift.

Below are some easy ideas that you can get for unique wedding gifts.

Unique Wedding Gifts for the Couple

All of these gifts can be shared by both the bride and groom and most of them create very nice memories of the wedding day. These unique wedding gifts are something that will hopefully sustain them through some of the rockier times later in their marriage.

Photo Quilts - These have become very popular gift items and can be found almost anywhere online and also locally if you do a little searching. These items are a lot of fun as you can imagine the newly wed couple curled up together on the couch under a blanket with their own pictures on it. What a great way to truly celebrate the couple. You simply need anywhere between 1 to 45 good quality photos that can either be printed or in digital format. You can send these in to the company and in just a few days you will get back a beautiful quilt. One fun way to do this is take pictures of botht he bride and groom and their respective families. Then use the pictures to show the uniting of two families.

Another fun idea that a photo quilt can be used for is as a guest book. Yes, that’s right a guest book. Simple hang the quilt where guests will be entering before the ceremony and provide some nice sharpie permanent markers. Have everyone leave a unique and personalized message.

Personalize Photo Pillow - Can’t you just see it now a wonderful photo pillow on the newly wed couples bed? You send in your favorite picture of the bride and groom and it gets turned into a unique custom wedding gift pillow. How is that for personalized!

Family Portrait Platters- you have probably all seen those cartoonists that will do caricatures of people at a local street fair or some other big gathering. Well a family photo platter takes this idea and makes it into a very unique wedding gift. You can pick the skin color, hair color and basic body types to represent each person in the family. These make wonderfully unique gifts that everyone is sure to enjoy.

Custom Wedding Cake Toppers - Want to go all out and give a unique wedding gift. Try a custom wedding cake topper. You send in pictures of the couple including images of their clothes and or activities that they like to do and a sculptor will make a custom wedding cake topper based on your input. Just make sure you work this out with the wedding planner and bride before spending the money. These are typically done in polymer clay and will last forever.

These are just a few of the many of great ideas for unique wedding gifts. It is very popular and thoughtful to give something that has been personalized and this is something to consider as you search for your unique gift. Adding the personalization shows that you have taken the time to think about the newly weds and their likes and dislikes and not just gotten a stock out of the store mass produced gift.

Whatever unique wedding gift you choose an important key it to plan ahead. You do not want to try and do any of the above ideas the day before the wedding. To make a gift personalized can take some time and you will want to leave two or more weeks to get the gift done. So plan ahead, be creative and have fun with your wedding gift and you are sure to end up with something they will remember and cherish forever. Much better then just another toaster that will get returned.

No matter if the wedding is grand or simple, the event is almost always marked with a wedding gift for the special couple. In times past, the gift was usually a household item. Embarking on their new life together meant buying their first house and living as a family. Linen, china and small kitchen appliances were given to help the couple set up their new house.

Today we find many couples living together before they have a wedding. At the time of their wedding their house is already set up. Which leads to the question, “What do we give the special couple to celebrate their vows to each other?”

For some, gifts have shifted from household items to personal items. Spa packages and pampering products are seen being given to the bride and sports tickets and sports equipment to the groom. Sometimes a special event package is added on to the honeymoon or plane tickets are upgraded to first class. Most resorts and cruise lines have fruit, flower and gourmet gift baskets that can be purchased and placed in the newlywed’s room for you.

For far away friends and family the gift search can be even more of a challenge. Gift cards although less than personal are, as they say, always the right size. Hiring a maid for the new couple to clean for a few months is a nice idea. Gift baskets filled with tasty delicacies the couple wouldn’t normally treat themselves to can be a delicious surprise. There is a wide variety of gift baskets to choose from containing everything from caviar and sparkling cider to brownies and muffins. A breakfast basket containing everything necessary for a wonderful gourmet breakfast might be just the unique gift you’re looking for.

If you still want to stick with the more traditional gifts like gifts for their home, there’s still some ideas out there. A personalized quilt is a unique idea and will be appreciated for many years to come. You could get the happy couple an upgraded appliance or a set of holiday dinnerware. A plaque for outside their home with their house number or name is a nice touch they may not have. A security system is a great idea for everyone’s home and a gift they will remember each time they close the door or turn off the light. A set of the finest sheets is something they may not treat themselves to but would definitely enjoy.

Although the social circumstances of marriages may have changed, our desire to celebrate the giving of vows has not. Adjusting our gift ideas can be challenging. Be careful to consider your newlyweds and what might mean the most to them when choosing their gift. Give from the heart and you can’t go wrong.

In case you’ve been living on another planet for the past several months, you may not have heard that Star Jones was getting married. For the rest of us here on planet earth we couldn’t escape this joyous news unless we swore off pop culture icons like Entertainment Tonight and People magazine.

Star Jones, current co-host of TV’s chat fest The View with Barbara Walters, recently married Wall Street banker Al Reynolds in an elaborate, pull-out-all-the-stops wedding extravaganza fit for a queen - or maybe a successful diva.

That’s right. Star Jones is a world-class diva. Okay, anyone familiar with Star knows her penchant for pampering herself with the finer things in life. So, it shouldn’t be any big surprise that she went all out to have the wedding she’d been dreaming about since she was eight years old.

Star’s fairytale wedding included such niceties as a wedding gown with a 27-foot veil topped with a crystal tiara, a 60-member Broadway choir, more attendants than Princess Di had at her wedding, and a custom made 7-carat princess cut diamond wedding ring.

Of course, as soon as the juicy wedding details surfaced in the media, the Star Jones haters came out of the woodworks - - often expressing their mean-spirited views of Star, Al, and their special day with vicious glee.

All right. Maybe Star went just a teeny weenie bit over the top. But so what? In the end, it’s just one couple’s happy wedding day. Theirs just happened to have a lot more bling bling than most folks.

Admit it. Most of us would have loved to have sneaked a peak into the star-studded event, if only to gawk at celebrity guests like: Angela Bassett, Kim Cattral, Chris Rock, Hillary Clinton, Vivica A. Fox, Barbara Walters, Lisa Ling, Kelly Ripa, Al Roker, Blair Underwood, and Donald Trump.

Whew! Now that’s a lot of star powered bling right there.

When it comes right down to it, one person’s overblown extravaganza is another person’s Cinderella fairytale come true. It’s a matter of personal style and taste. I say, do whatever makes you happy. That’s all that counts in the end.
